The content itself, however, will be free and accessible to all players who’ve completed the main questline at least once. As Blizzard warned a few weeks back, players will need to roll an entirely new “seasonal” character to take part in the Season of the Malignant questline. “But they are extremely powerful and are new options in how to play the game.” Players who beat the new questline will also gain access to the malignant tunnel, which is filled with what are essentially endgame dungeons where players can farm tough enemies for more powerful and specific malignant hearts. “You can take these malignant hearts, you can socket them into your jewelry, and that gives you these kinds of stupid new broken builds that are hopefully balanced,” Piepiora said. There are a total of 32 malignant powers for players to use, according to the developers. “It is very much not like a gem in the sense that it has an enormous amount of power.” Caged hearts, which will be one of three distinct colors, and can be slotted into new gear types with special color-corresponding “infested sockets” made just for the new loot type. “ like a gem in that you can socket it into gear,” Diablo IV’s associate game director Joseph Piepiora said during Thursday’s developer livestream. If defeated, these even tougher variants will drop caged hearts, which can be used to create new unique buffs and abilities. These hearts can be collected, spawning a “malignant monster” version of these felled enemies. As players navigate their way through the new questline, they’ll come across special enemies afflicted with the malignance that will drop so-called malignant hearts. They’ll join Cormond, a brand new character, in the battle to take the world back from this infectious evil. Taking place after the events of Diablo IV's main campaign, the new season will see players fight to extinguish the titular plague, the malignance, from the world’s living beings. Season of the Malignant, Diablo’s first post-release content drop, will feature new gear, gem-like loot called malignant hearts, as well as a new boss, legendary items, enemies, and areas to explore. Diablo IV players now have a better idea of what the immediate future looks like for Blizzard’s newest live service title.
